Part bred passport Update

Lateset information regarding part bred passports.

Following a recent meeting between DEFRA and the Council, we would like to inform you of a small but important update regarding the production of passports for part-bred Cleveland Bay horses.

We fully understand that any changes to equine documentation can raise concerns, and we want to reassure you that there is no change to your rights or responsibilities as owners. The update affects only the way in which passports are produced, not the content, validity, or recognition of your horse’s documentation.

This adjustment has been made to align with DEFRA’s updated guidance and to ensure continued compliance with national standards. The new format will streamline processing while maintaining the integrity and identity of part-bred Cleveland Bay horses.

We appreciate your understanding and continued support. If you have any questions or would like further clarification, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

The Cleveland Bay Horse Society urgently seeks additional volunteers to serve on its Council, as well as nominations for the office of President Elect. The Council is currently operating with fewer members than required, placing a heavy burden on those presently serving and restricting the Society’s capacity to deliver essential work. Serving on the Council offers members the opportunity to contribute directly to the governance and future of our breed. Prior committee experience is not necessary — only commitment, goodwill, and a willingness to serve.

You must be a current member to stand for council.

Important information regarding AGM 19th Oct 2024.

NEW AGM VENUE FOR 2024

The 2024 AGM will be held on 19th October at The Bridge Hotel and Spa, Walshford, Wetherby, North Yorkshire LS22 5HS. The venue is halfway between London and Edinburgh just off the A1 and is close to Leeds Bradford airport.

Members are invited to arrive at The Bridge Hotel from 11am. Tea and coffee will be served allowing you to socialise before lunch which will be served at 12 noon until 1:30pm.

Lunch will be in the form of a carvery, including vegetables (vegetarian option also available), followed by dessert and juice/tea/coffee. The cost for this will be £15.50 per person. Reservation forms will be included in the AGM packet and must be returned with full payment by October 12th 2024.

The AGM will commence at 2pm in the Conference room and will adjourn no later than 5:30pm whereon, we have been invited by The Bridge to retire to the bar area to enjoy the evening.

We have negotiated a special room rate of £115 per night B&B at the Bridge. They can be reached at 01937 580 115, please ask for Marissa. This special rate for rooms will be held until 24th August with a £25 deposit. There is also a Days Inn about 20 minutes away which offers favorable rates.

If you were lucky enough to win a trophy at last year’s AGM, we would be grateful if you would make arrangements for it to be returned, either in person, or by arrangement to the AGM venue or by other means to cbhsshows@gmail.com

CBHS Merchandise will be on sale at the AGM including branded clothing and stud books/magazines.

The AGM will be recorded and available on website after completion.

Royal Windsor Horse Show round up 03/05/25

Despite inclement weather, spirits were not dampened at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. Attendance was good and we would like to thank and congratulate all exhibitors, owners and connections for putting on a great performance for the spectators, which included HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

Entries at Windsor Horse Show are for Pure Bred only and divided into In-hand and Ridden classes. Class 65 was the In-hand class and was divided into 2 sections. Section A was for animals 4yr old and over and Section B was for animals 3yrs and under. Class 66 was the Ridden class open to animals 4yr and older.

Results of Class 65

Section A 4yrs+(3 entered, 3 presented)

1st Tynedale St Osmund, an 8yr old gelding by Arena Big Ben out of Beamish Midnight Rose. Bred by Mary Ann Reay, owned and handled by Ashleigh Balderson.

2nd Cholderton Quidel, an 8yr old Gelding by Cholderton Icarus out of Cholderton Lyric. Bred by Henry Edmunds, owned and handled by Sally Tilly

3rd Kenley Oceania, a 7yr old mare by Holmside Applejack out of Affondale Taran. Bred by Lesley and Denis Orange, owned by Jackie Sparrow and handled by Allisia Startin

Section B youngstock.(6 entered, 4 presented)

1st Bahian Terminator, a 2yr old gelding by Wyevale Brayden out of Childrey Chez Black. Bred by Sarah Pomfret owned and handled by Emily Fisher.

2nd Knocksaul Dream Maker(last years winner), a 2yr old filly by Wyevale Boomerang out of Lindon Fides. Bred by Kate Lines, owned and handled by Tina Billingsley

3rd Scarholme Freya, a yearling filly by Brackenbrae Stormcloud out of Shireburn Ava. Bred by Jackie Sparrow, owned by Abbie Sattar and handled by Jenson York.

4th Kenley Sovereign Supreme, a 2yr old gelding by Holmside Applejack out of Afondale Taran. Bred by Lesley and Denis Orange, owned and handled by Heidi Lorefice.

The Folds Challenge Trophy kindly donated and presented by Cecilia Delville-Lindsay was awarded to Bahian Terminator.

Best turn out and best gelding rosettes and prize money were very kindly sponsored and awarded by Rowena Scrimshaw. Tynedale St Osmund won both in Section A and Bahian Terminator won both in Section B.

The Cleveland Bay Challenge is an annual competition that runs from May 1st to Sept 30th. The aim of the Challenge is to create a community where everyone who owns a Cleveland bay pure or part bred can come together to share their experiences and connect with like minded people. We aim to be all inclusive so any Cleveland bay is eligible as long as they have 12.5% provable Cleveland bay breeding.

The 2024 Mare SPARKS sheets are now available! SPARKS is a breed advisory scheme designed to promote the genetic health of the global Cleveland Bay Horse population. The data sheets have been produced annually since 2004, as an aid to Mare owners when selecting prospective stallions. They are based on pedigree & genetic analysis of the studbook using the SPARKS and GENES software packages. This is a useful tool that should be used in addition to your best judgement for soundness, conformation and disposition. You will find the sheets as well as guidance on how to use them here:

Overseas members can claim £100 per breeding mare with a maximum of two claims per breeder/stud. The claim is for a CBHS registered Pure mare covered / AI by a CBHS registered Pure licenced stallion. Full rules and conditions are attached to the form which is in the member download section of the website. Class 32: Pure bred in Hand class - CBHS rosettes will be awarded for the following sections: Mare, Foal, Yearling, 2 yr old, 3 yr old, Stallion and Gelding. The CBHS will also present special rosettes to the overall Champion and Res Pure-Bred In Hand.

Rowena Scrimshaw offers £75 plus rosette for the most worthy gelding, and £50 for the turnout prize in this class.

Class 33: Part-Bred In Hand - CBHS rosettes will be awarded for the following sections: Mare, Foal, Yearling, 2 year old, 3 year old and Gelding. The 2023 Annual General Meeting will be held on October 21 at Aston Hall, Sheffield. The meeting will start at 11 a.m. and following the meeting, tea or lunch will be served at 2 p.m. Full details will be sent to all members.

CBHS National Breed Show

15 August 2023 at Addington Manor

Closing Date 1 August.

The CBHS is delighted to be holding a breed show in conjunction with SHB (GB).

PLEASE NOTE: Cleveland Bays are not required to have a SHB (GB) membership number for our classes. When you get to the box that requests this number, just enter four digits, such as 1234, and proceed with your entry.

SHB (GB) have agreed to split the In Hand class into youngstock and over 4 year olds if there are enough entries and to further subdivide entries in to age categories if there are sufficient entries.

The winner of each section will be awarded a special rosette kindly sponsored by Saracen Feed , Rod Ward Violins and Fiddle Daemons , who will also sponsor the Champion and Reserve rosettes in each class.

Rowena Scrimshaw has, again, agreed to offer prizes. She wishes to award £75 and rosettes to the most worthy pure gelding in Class 32 and Class 34, and a £50 turnout award in each of the four classes. We are most grateful to Rowena for this continued sponsorship.

In addition to Rowena’s sponsorship, Braithwaite Stud have kindly offered to present their prize to the Supreme Champion at the National Breed Show. Many thanks to all at Braithwaite Stud for this generous offer.

Great Yorkshire Show 2023!

The Yorkshire weather forecast for the week of the Great Yorkshire Show was a mixed bag and a couple of downpours pre-start of the Cleveland Bay classes certainly didn’t seem to dampen spirits or effect the glowing shiny polished coats of the horses put forward for the classes.

The classes got underway pretty much as scheduled at 2.45pm, with the Pure Bred youngsters taking the lead and a crowd had gathered to see the horses in the ring. I wasn’t in until class 5, and I did try my very best to live stream the classes, Mulgrave Snowdrop in 1 hand and IPhone in the other. Unfortunately, after umpteen attempts and lack of signal I gave up. I’ve since been told that additional to the poor signal around that ring the police had (due to an incident elsewhere) put a ‘coms down’ in effect and that could explain the lack of mobile coverage.

Anyway back to business and serious business it was. The standard of horses and turnout was 2 ^nd to none, some very nice horses were put forward across the 8 classes available and I think Maggie Brown, our judge this year had her work cut out. It was nice to see a couple of new and younger handlers taking to the ring, I hope they enjoyed the experience of the GYS environment.

The atmosphere was buzzing, the collection ring at the side of the Ridings ring is not particularly big, but was filled with a sea of bays, all handler’s chit chatting away, hoof oil and coat shine baskets lying around, as one by one competitors and horses went in the ring. As I looked around the on lookers, there were a number of breeders, old and new sitting in the crowd, I spotted Barbara Martindale, Steve Pullan, Liz Worthy, Sarah Ramsden to name a few and many from further afield from both higher North and the lower South. I chatted personally to a couple of new comers to the breed, who it was pleasing to hear had just purchased a Cleveland Bay and become members that day at the stand on the show field. Along with letting some excited on lookers have a pat of Mulgrave Snowdrop over the fence.

I personally thought that the horses put forward were of a particularly high standard and the turnout of both horse and handlers a credit to the breed. A very strong mare and foal class can only be a positive sign. 1 ^st and 2 ^nd place winners in the classes were invited to take part in their retrospective championships that took place back to back around 5.30pm and it was celebrations all round for the Braithwaite Stud, with a champion place for Braithwaite Mulsanne, followed by a reserve champion place for the Barbarian Stud, with Barbarian Maverick. Running on to the Part bred championship saw Jo Firth back in the winnings, with a champion placing for Barbarian Hot Gossip, accompanied in reserve by Mulgrave Stud and Harriet Potters Mulgrave Duke.

Friendly congratulations took place and smiles all round, with the odd bit of ringside banter which always makes for an enjoyable day.
