ALL Equines need to be Microchipped

MICROCHIPPING FOR ALL EQUINES IN ENGLAND, WALES, AND SCOTLAND (HORSES, PONIES AND DONKEYS) WILL BE MANDATORY FROM 1 ST OCTOBER, 2020*

This is a reminder to all Members and Non-members that the Equine Identification Regulations make it a legal requirement for all horses in England, Wales and Scotland to be identified.

Since 30th June 2009 all newly passported equines have had the requirement to be microchipped, but from 1 st October, 2020*, ALL equines, regardless of their age or when their passport was first issued, will need to be retrospectively microchipped by a Vet.

Failure to microchip your horse may result in sanctions such as a fixed penalty notice. An owner may be fined up to £5000 for failing to identify a horse in line with current legislation. The new law is to enable local authorities and police to track down the owners of any horse and has been brought into effect for welfare reasons.

The Central Equine Database have the records of all equines and their microchip numbers. Any new microchips will need to be recorded against the passport of the equine database via the organisation that issued the original passport. You can check your equine’s chip once this has been done at this site www.equineregister.co.uk by typing in the microchip number on the passport.

The Cleveland Bay Horse Society provide for the addition of a microchip via the form that is downloadable from the website here http://www.clevelandbay.com/downloads - look for Microchip Addition.

The fee payable to the CBHS is £15, and must accompany the forms completed by you and your Vet. You will need to contact your Vet to confirm any fees payable for this service to them. You will receive confirmation from the CBHS that the microchip addition has been uploaded to the Central Equine Database.

If you have any queries regarding this, or if you need a supply of the form, please email clevelandbayoffice@gmail.com  or telephone 07895 535147. Alternatively contact any member of Council for assistance.
