Hawlmark Classic Twilight
September has already turned out to be another successful month for Ripon- based breeders, Sue and Nigel Cowgill, with their part-bred Cleveland Bay filly, ‘Hawlmark Classic Twilight’ who is being shown this year by show producer, Peter Richmond.
Twilight, who is by the thoroughbred stallion, Classic, out of the Cowgill’s own home-bred Cleveland Bay mare, Highpasture Hawlmark, has had an outstanding show season with numerous wins in Hunter classes and taking Championships at Otley, Hambleton, Yorkshire Sporthorse, North Yorkshire County and Border Union. Twilight was Champion Part-Bred Cleveland Bay and Reserve Hunter Youngstock Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show in July.
Twilight eclipsed these successes at the Bucks County Show on the 1st September when having been declared Hunter Youngstock Champion, she won the Cuddy In-Hand Championship at the show, guaranteeing her a coveted place in the Cuddy Supreme In-Hand Championship final at October’s Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) held at the NEC in Birmingham.
Twilight’s consistency over the season was also recognised for the second year running by Sporthorse GB (SHGB) at the National Hunter Championships at Addington Manor on the 6th September, when she was pronounced the winner of the 3-Year-Old Hunter Youngstock award. This award is operated on a points based system covering all SHGB shows between May and August and Twilight’s award means she was the most successful 3- year-old In-Hand Hunter nationally in 2011.
Sue Cowgill said: “Nigel and I are obviously delighted that Twilight has had another fantastic season. She was unbeaten in 10 consecutive classes this year after a similar run as a two-year-old and qualification for the Cuddy at the Horse of the Year Show and the recognition of her success by Sporthorse GB is a great way to mark the end of an outstanding youngstock career. We will start her ridden work after HOYS and get her out under saddle next year. We will then decide on a future breeding programme. We hope to repeat the mating between Classic and Highpasture Hawlmark in the spring ”.
