300 CLUB

WHY NOT JOIN OUR 300 CLUB?

Cleveland Bay Horse Society

‘300 Club’

Introduction

The idea behind the CBHS 300 club is to raise money for the CBHS whilst at the same time creating an interest that members and non members of the CBHS can have around their ownership of a share in the 300 Club which may provide a dividend in excess of the shareholding.

300 x £12 shares, each with a unique number will be issued to subscribers (maximum 15 shares per individual) with the intention raising gross capital of £3600 for the CBHS each year.

Each month a draw will be made when three shares will be picked out. A main prize of £75 and three reserve prizes of £25. The total paid out over a 12 month period will therefore be £1800 provided all shares are sold, leaving the balance of £1800 for the CBHS.

The 300 Club will be supervised at all times by the Council of the CBHS whose decision on all disputes arising from the administration of the 300 Club will be final and binding. The 300 Club will commence on the 1st April 2006 provided at least 150 shares have been purchased.

The first draw will be made at the 2006 King George V Stallion event and thereafter between the 5th and 10th day of each month.

  1. Objectives – To supplement the income of the Cleveland Bay Horse Society (CBHS) in its work promoting and protecting the Cleveland Bay Horse, to attract new members and to encourage a sense of fun around raising funds for the breed.

2. Rules –

·       All members of the CBHS, their friends and associates shall be eligible for the 300 Club.

·       The club year will run from the 1st April to the 31st March.

·       The administration of the 300 Club will ultimately be the responsibility of the Council of the CBHS.

·       The shares for each specific Club year will cease to have effect on the 31st March of each year. If the subscriber wishes to continue for the new 300 club year their shareholding will be replaced with a new shareholding on payment of the appropriate amount per share and that will take effect from the date of payment.

·       The maximum number of shares shall be 300 although a lesser number is acceptable with a pro-rata reduction in the value of the monthly prizes to a minimum of 270 shares.

·       300 Club members may apply for any quantity of shares to a maximum of 15, which will be allocated depending on availability.

·       Applications potentially taking the total club members above 300 will be held on a waiting list in order of receipt date of application and will be allocated as shares become available

·       The minimum period of membership for the draw is 12 months.

·       Subscriptions of £12 per share will be paid by members.

·       Share numbers will be allocated to subscribers at random by the 300 Club Committee on payment of the appropriate fee.

·       New members joining after the introduction of the draw will pay a pro- rata amount for their share(s) for that year depending on the number of full months remaining in the club year.  I.e. join in May you pay £11. Members joining in this way will not be eligible for their shares to be drawn in the month they have joined. Their shares will be eligible for the following monthly draw.

·       All monies raised from the 300 Club will be held in the accounts of the CBHS and will be used to promote and protect the Cleveland Bay.

Draws and Prizes –

·       There will be four share numbers drawn each month between the 5th and 10th days of the month. The first number drawn will receive the main prize of £75 the second, third and fourth drawn will each receive a prize of £25.

·       The draw will be supervised by a member of the 300 Club committee who will nominate an individual to make the draw.

300 Club Committee –

·       The 300 Club Committee shall consist of the Secretary of the CBHS, the Secretary’s Secretary and two other Council members.

·       The Committee shall be accountable to the Council of the CBHS for all matters pertaining to the Draw. The decision of the CBHS Council shall be final and binding on all matters.

·       The administration of the 300 Club shall be a standing item on the agenda of the Council of the CBHS.

Cessation of the 300 Club

·       The decision that the 300 Club should be wound up shall rest with the Council of the CBHS.  In the event of cessation of the 300 club all remaining funds within the 300 Club on the date of cessation shall pass to the CBHS.

BASIC SOCIETY INFORMATION

Protecting and Promoting the CLEVELAND BAY
A BRITISH HORSE with A HISTORY and A FUTURE

Breed societies are usually formed to develop and establish a young breed but when this society was formed in 1884 it's aim was the preservation of an old established breed.  The objectives of the Society remain to this day "the preservation and improvement of the standard of horses in general and of the Cleveland Bay horse in particular by improving the standard of breed of Cleveland blood into horse breeding".  In pursuance of these objectives the Society is concerned in a wide range of activities.

BREEDING

It not only complies and publishes the Stud Book the Society maintains a Register of part-bred horses and operates a Grading Register for mares outside the Stud Book.  As the authority responsible for the licensing of colts and stallions it endeavors to encourage the breeding of both pure and part-bred stock from approved animals.  Thanks to the generosity of the Horserace Betting Levy Board the  Society operates premium schemes to promote the breeding of pure-bred horses as without such foundation stock there can be no part-breds.

SHOWS AND COMPETITION

Each year the King George V competition is held, usually at York Livestock Centre,  to determine the Supreme Champion from amongst the Premium Stallions.  The event includes a class for all other licensed stallions and colts and a mixed ridden class for pure and part-bred horses.

The luncheon that follows provides an opportunity for all enthusiasts and members to socialize and broaden their knowledge.

Throughout the year the Society runs two competitions open to both pure and part-bred horses.  The first is for in-hand showing classes only whilst the second is for performance in any discipline in harness or under saddle.

An annual breed show which has numerous classes for both pure and part-bred horses, in-hand and under saddle, is held early September in the Midlands.

SALES AND PROMOTION

The Society is keen to promote and assist it's members in the sale of both pure and part-bred horses.  An annual sale is held in the Ebor Sale Ring at the York Livestock Centre in September.  Catalogues are available from the Society's office in advance through there are often very late entries.  Many breeders prefer to sell their animals privately.  Here the Society is able to help both vendor and purchaser by providing a list of breeders of pure-bred horses.

The publication of an annual magazine and regular newsletters containing a variety of articles on subjects connected with the breed further facilities the exchange of information and promotion of Cleveland horses in general.

The Northern and Southern Cleveland Bay Breeders Clubs are supporting groups who organise various competitive and social events

The Society is constantly striving to meet the demands of it's members and promote and expand the Cleveland Bay in the new Millennium.

The Cleveland Bay is our heritage.  It must be protected for future generations of horse lovers whether they be breeders or admirers of the breed.

By joining the Society you will be contributing to the preservation and promotion of the Cleveland Bay - The British Horse with a History and a Future.

WHY NOT JOIN THE C.B.H.S?

Even if you do not breed, own or ride a Cleveland you can support this wonderful British breed by becoming a member of this Society.

Your attendance at meetings and involvement in social activities will be most welcome.  As a member you will be able to actively promote pure and part-bred Clevelands.

Please click here and complete the on line membership form.

REGISTRATION

If you already own a pure-bred Cleveland Bay please make sure it is registered with this Society.  A Cleveland is a valuable horse and it is important the Society is aware of it's existence.

The Society also maintains a register for part-bred horses.  To be eligible a horse must have at least one great, great, grandparent entered in the stud book.

If you have an unregistered pure or part-bred the Society will be pleased to help you in the registering of your horse.  This will enable you to enter classes at shows throughout the country and to compete with your horse in the Society's show and performance horse competition.

Registration with other bodies should not replace registration with this Society.  If registration with the British Horse Database is necessary for you to compete in certain disciplines this can be arranged through this Society by the over stamping of Society registration documents.

Horses of Distinction

The list of pure and part bred Cleveland Bays achieving much in competition is growing daily - perhaps more competitors realise that a touch of Cleveland Bay is now worth acknowledging?

Nearly every week there is a mention of a PBCB in the Horse & Hound, and the following are just a short selection of those within the last few weeks. If anyone knows of a name to add then please contact the CBHS office or the magazine editor!

Horses to watch in 2000:

Pembridge Minstrel - owner Robert Lumb and ridden by Ian Wills. Based at Shifnal, Shropshire. PBCB. Eventing successfully in Open Intermediate. Wins include Weston Park in top company. British Horse Database award for top young stallion 1999.

Irn Bru - Caroline Simmers, Scotland. Dressage. Sired by CB Littlebeck Cavalier and out of a Welsh Cob. Winner of the Steel Salver for gaining the most dressage points in one season throughout Britain. Will compete to Medium level in 2000.

William Hill - Nicky McDonnell. PBCB. Now 13 y.o. William Hill is back to winning ways. Won the AI section at Poplar Park.

Additionally two pure bred stallions are now beginning a new career:

Oakenbank Grenadier - pure bred performance tested Cleveland Bay stallion - now owned by Jean Morgan, just beginning his dressage career.

                                            CLEVELAND BAY STANDARD OF POINTS

The following Standard of Points have been suggested by the Cleveland Bay Council for the guidance of persons interested in the breed and Judges of the breed.

HEIGHT:  16.0 h.h. to 16.2 h.h. but height should not disqualify an otherwise  good sort.

COLOUR:  Cleveland Bays must be bay with black points, i.e. black legs, black mane and black tail.  Grey hairs in mane and tail do not disqualify.   These have been long recognised as a feature in certain strains of pure Cleveland blood.  White, beyond a very small star,  is outside Breed standards but as from January 2005 they can still be registered however Breed Committee comments are noted on the passport and in the Stud Book.  Legs which are bay or red below the  knees and hocks do not disqualify, but are faulty as to colour.

BODY:   The body should be wide and deep.  The back should not be too long, and should be strong with muscular loins.

The shoulders should be sloping, deep and muscular.

The quarters should be level, powerful, long and oval, the tail springing well from the quarters.

HEAD AND NECK:   The head characteristic of the breed should be bold and not too small.  It should be well carried on a long lean neck

EYES: Eyes should be large, well set and kindly in expression.

EARS: Tend to be large and fine.

THE LIMBS:

Arms and thighs and second thighs should be muscular.

The knees and hocks should be large and well closed.

There should be 9" upwards of good flat bone below the knee measured at the nearest point on a tight tape.

The pasterns should be strong, sloping and not too long.

The legs should be clear of superfluous hair and as clean and hard as possible.

       THE FEET:

O    One of the most important features of the breed; the feet must be of the best and blue in colour.  Feet that

ar     are shallow or narrow are undesirable.

                                                "NO FOOT - NO HORSE".

ACTION:   Action must be true, straight and free.  High action is not characteristic of the breed.

The Cleveland which moves well and which is full of courage will move freely from the shoulder and will flex

his knees and hocks sufficiently.  The action required is free all round, gets over the ground, and fits the

wear-and-tear qualities of the breed.
